I have mixed feelings about this book which is why I only gave it 3 stars. Or maybe it's because the author did such a good job at telling how life was for Cat. I almost stopped reading early in the book because I don't consider it enjoyable reading when men and women so blatantly flirt and have no regard for marriage vows, and even less for those married having no regard for their vows. But the story itself kept me wanting to read to see how it all played out. As someone else wrote it is a gut wrenching read. It is so sad to know that the things that happened to Cat really happened in real life. If you like historical fiction then this might be for you, for sadly it is part of American history. And I admit the story has my interest to the point of reading the next book The Freedom of the Soul.Product details

One of the best books I've read about slavery and the South. I loved the way the author weaved the bits and pieces of generations and their lives together. I've always loved novels about families and generations and this one is superb. While I noticed a few mistakes in the ebook version I read, this is a five-star story all the way. I was glued to it from start to finish and hated to see the story end. If there's a sequel, I'll want to devour it the way I did this one. This story is heartwrenching. I couldn't help but care for the characters, and they were all like "real" people to me as the story brought slavery and the South alive page after page. Cat was one strong woman, the strongest character in the book. Though she never knew "real-married" love, she knew "real" love. I don't recall ever having read this author before, but it won't be my last. She creates a real world page after page, and the story was like watching a movie in my head. It was real. It was vibrant. It was full of life, love, loss, pain, heartache, joys, sorrows, birth, death, a true journey of the soul. The title is a perfect fit. When you read this novel, you will take your own journey through another time and place when racial tension was high in the South. Growing up, I heard tales of such days, but this book brought them to life. I love the South, and I write Southern novels, so I love to read them. This story will stay with you after you close the book and so will the characters. Don't miss this one.
Anyone of African American heritage knows the struggle of light skin vs. dark skin; the feeling of hatred because of your skin tone; the feeling of fear of being in the wrong place. The stories as told by Andy and the diaries weave a tale of love, hatred, jealousy and sacrifice. Each of the characters touches a part of the heart and in the end, the story brings them all together. This was an excellent read!
It's good to be reminded from time to time about man's inhumanity to man. It makes the evidence of the strength of the human spirit that much more poignant and remarkable. Because The Color of the Soul does both of those things, I will warn you up front that this book is often very difficult to read. There were times when I had to put it down for a bit and just walk away because it was that profoundly upsetting. The fact that I was mesmerized by the characters, the attention to the details of the span of history in the American South from the mid-19th to the early 20th century and because I simply had to know how it turned out forced me to return to it's pages each time. I am a child of the South and I can tell you that many of the horrific events described in this novel are not elements of a novelist's imagination. They are accurate reflections of events and racial relationships in the period just before the Civil War to the advent of the Civil Rights Movement.
The central character, Andy Carmichael is a young man who has lived in two worlds for his entire life and doesn't feel he belongs in either. This book tells the story of his voyage of discovery and acceptance and it is one if the best I've read in a very long while. Other characters central to Andy's story are by turns sympathetic and despicable making it difficult to decide how I felt about them until the very end. That, to me, is a hallmark of talented writing...the ability to create rich, relatable characterization, warts and all.
I gave this novel 5 stars because of its emotional impact on me, not because it is perfect. There was a fairly substantial plot point that was revealed toward the end that felt a bit convenient and contrived to me. There was also the side plot of Andy and his wife that I found a bit distracting, but the author ended up using it well to merge two elements of the story together.
Bottom line This story is worth your time even with the seat-squirming discomfort and periodic feelings of absolute horror. Read it. You won't be sorry.
I liked this book, it was an easy read and the story kept me guessing till the end. I am not clear on whether or not this book is classified as Christian reading material or not, but there was definitely a religious undertone to the story. I have read several books from Christian writers and this book does not come close to being as "preachy" & full of quoted scripture as those books have been but this book might possibly be from a Christian writer.
The characters and their struggles were believable and it was neat to ultimately see how the families intertwined in the end. There were a couple of typos in the E-book but they weren't terribly distracting. I did, however, experience a first while reading this E-edition. Occasionally a word would be missing and in it's place would be a square. I never did figure out what was going on.
The only criticism that I will offer for this book concerns the fluency of the writing style. Sometimes the diary entries were in 1st person and sometimes they were in 3rd person. I think I remember reading that Camilla preferred to use 3rd person in her diaries but not only is that unrealistic, it's also distracting to the reader.
It appears as if Book 2 of this series is not available for at the time, I wish it was. I'd be interested to see if Book 2 was about Andy & Lexie or if it contained more historical information about Andy's heritage.
