Sundered Anniversary Edition The Nevermore Trilogy Book 1 eBook Shannon Mayer
I didn’t read the original version of this trilogy, so I can’t give an opinion as to whether the tweaks are an improvement, but what I can say is that I loved Shannon Mayer’s SUNDERED! It’s a pseudo zombie story that follows a couple who’s love overcomes insurmountable odds. It’s corny, and does require a bit of a leap vis-à-vis why only Mara & Bastian’s connection trumps all where as other twosomes “turn”. But, it’s written in such a way that it’s next to impossible to put down, and makes you want to believe in unicorns. This first installment was spent mostly on character and world-building which were an indispensable stage in this series because the author’s Nevermores are NOT dead men walking, and it’s important to understand the differences. It’s also imperative to grasp the intricacies of the main couple’s relationship, and what motivates them. The rest of this novel was driven by the aftermath of the apocalypse, and developing Jessica & Dan, the secondaries. I was thoroughly captivated by the overall concept which is why I wasted no time in starting the second volume.
SUNDERED was not your typical zombie story.

Sundered Anniversary Edition The Nevermore Trilogy Book 1 eBook Shannon Mayer Reviews
Any time you name a miracle drug off a line from an Edgar Allan Poe poem you can bet your bottom bucky it's gonna be a horror show.
NEVERMORE was - overall - a fast, enjoyable read. The "zombies" were a little different, so points for creativity. It also creates different layers of conflict and suspense that sets it apart from the standard fair.
Occasionally I felt like the characters were being reckless or setting themselves up for failure, mostly as an excuse to introduce more drama and peril. It wasn't as annoying as it could have been and - honestly - I felt like some of their reactions were more believable and justifiably vulnerable than most books in the genre strive to depict. Between these two, I feel it balances out.
Interesting start and I'll probably read on with the series.
I first read this story in the anthology, Darlings of Decay. I highlighted it on my and made a note to look into this author and series. That was quite a few months ago. Finally, 2 days ago, I had a chance to go through that collection of stories and read over all my notes. When I got to this book I read the notes I made and the whole story came flooding back to me. I instantly re-read it (in only a few hours) and remembered just how much I absolutely loved the story. I'm now almost done with the 3rd book (in less than 3 days) and figured I should probably take a quick break and get these reviews done.
Sundered is not your typical apocalypse story. A new drug becomes available that promises all kinds of miracles. Weight loss, fertility problems, heart health issues and Parkinsons Disease are just a few of the things that the "Nevermore" shot promises to fix. Everyone immediately rushes to their family doctor to take advantage of this new miracle vaccine. It doesn't take long to realize that this new found drug is not all its cracked up to be. Before they realize it, humans are attacking and eating other humans. Their eyes and skin start to yellow and they are but a shell of their former self. In just hours, the 90% of the worlds population that took advantage of the "Nevermore" shot are no longer human. The few people that did not take advantage of the medication are now just trying to figure out how to survive and avoid falling into the clutches of the "Nevermores".
If you're looking for a unique read and enjoy apocalyptic type stories, as well as romance, then I highly recommend this book. This is the first thing I've read from Shannon Mayer and I can say with certainty that, based on this book alone, she has herself a new fan! I absolutely loved this story so much I've read it twice and haven't been able to put my down for 2 straight days as I finish the other 2 book in the series! Great job Shannon!! I look forward to checking out the other work available from you!!
Mara & Sebastian bring us into a world that could be today... in Canada... that becomes a nightmare overnight. A young couple who seemingly have it all... except the child Mara so desperately wants. When a seeming "miracle" drug appears that should end their fertility issues Mara jumps at the chance to use it - only to learn she's allergic to the primary component. And, then things start to unravel...
Shannon is a true wordsmith, and I adore her ability to create worlds that let you "live" with the characters in her stories. I had not read the original trilogy before so I can't compare this revision to the original, but I can say that this series is worth a read.
Unlike her other series - Rylee Adamson & The Elemental - this series is not a genre I would normally read on my own. I feel this series would appeal to anyone who enjoys post-apocalyptic and/or zombie stories . While this series doesn't truly deal with zombies the creatures are similar enough that they have that type of feeling/read.
